JULY NEWS

WHITCHURCH TAE KWON DO SCHOOL SCORES IT'S FIRST POINT IN COMPETITION!

NORTH MIDLANDS AREA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The North Midlands Area Championships were held on 8th July, this time we had representatives from both Oswestry and Whitchurch Tae Kwon Do Schools.  All three of our competitors were competing in the Yellow Belt, Men's Heavy Weight Sparring Division.

Mark McCausland was once again the sole  representative for Oswestry.  Mark put in another splendid performance, he won his first fight in style.  He took an early lead only to loose it to a dubious head kick which was awarded against him, (I thought it went over his head not actually making contact!).  Mark was undeterred and responded almost immediately with a head kick of his own to regain the lead.  Mark then went on to win several more points and win the fight.  Mark made his way into the quarter finals but unfortunately didn't manage to progress any further.

Whitchurch Tae Kwon Do School was represented by John Bickley and Arnold Smith.

John fought bravely, but unfortunately didn't make it through the first round.  When I say bravely I really do mean it, after John's fight he told me that he had stubbed his toe within the first few seconds of the fight starting.  It turns out that John had actually broken his toe!  So to continue the fight with a broken toe was extremely brave indeed.  In addition to this John was fighting above his weight,  when he put in his application he wasn't sure that he would be able to make middle weight and as a result entered the heavy weight division!  I'm sure you will all join me in wishing John a speedy recovery.

Arnold won a Bronze Medal! In his first ever competition, what more can I say!  Well plenty really, again all of Arnold's fights were tough.  He had to overcome some good fighters to make his way into the semi-finals.  Again the semi final was a close fight and Arnold was unlucky not to make it into the final.

Arnold's Bronze Medal is the first medal for either the Whitchurch or Oswestry Tae Kwon Do schools and scores our first point in a competition.  Points are awarded to the School for every medal won, one point for bronze, two points for silver and three points for gold.

I'm sure there is plenty more to come from all of our competitors as they gain in experience.  They should be as proud of their achievements as we are.  So Congratulations go out to Arnold, Mark and John for representing the schools and putting such good performances.  Above all I think they all enjoyed themselves.

So come on the rest of you lets see some more of you at competitions, don't  forget  it's not all about sparring, there is also the patterns competition, and our competitors need supporters!  So get along to a competition to support our competitors, get a feel for the occasion and meet like minded people from other clubs.
